3. PRE-SAFE and anti-collision measures

Since 2002, Mercedes has offered the PRE-SAFE system , which senses a collision situation before it occurs:

  • It tightens seatbelts, closes windows, adjusts headrests, and engages anticipatory braking.
  • In modern models, it includes a front-end texture and "Pre-Safe Impulse Side" which moves the passenger away from the expected location of a side impact.

4. Electrical Innovations: SBC and TwoBox

  • Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC): An electro-hydraulic braking technology used in the SL and S-Class since 2001 that allowed for intelligent brake pressure distribution to the wheels, with features such as "traffic jam assist", but was later withdrawn due to technical problems.
  • TwoBox system: Appearing in newer electric and hybrid cars such as the GLC and S-Class, it relies on electric assistance that dispenses with the vacuum of the combustion engine to apply pressure to the brakes, while recovering electrical energy during braking.

5. Additional tools for smart braking and comfort

  • Adaptive Brake, HOLD and Hill-Start Assist: Facilitate sequential braking, hill-climbing stability, and disc drying in wet conditions.

6. TwoBox electric braking system (in electric and hybrid vehicles)

  • Production began in 2020 on models such as the GLC Hybrid and S-Class Hybrid.
  • It relies on an independent electrical booster instead of the traditional vacuum system in motors, allowing for faster brake pressure and a shorter stopping distance.
  • Hydraulic braking and deceleration energy recovery are continuously integrated to achieve maximum energy efficiency.

7. SBC — Sensotronic Brake Control (Electro-hydraulic braking system)

  • Launched in 2001 with the SL and S-Class, it is considered one of the most precise braking systems through electronic control of brake pressure for each wheel.
  • It offers features such as soft braking in traffic jams and the “Traffic Jam Assist” feature.
  • It faced technical problems that led to its withdrawal from E-Class models. In the mid-2000s, and the warranty was renewed for up to 25 years on its components.
